It’s a thought that paralyzes millions of people every day. Where do I start? How do I start? And it has a very simple solution: take a single step…
It seems inconsequential, but the entire world functions on single steps every day: speaking up in a meeting, asking that person out, or taking your recycling bin to the end of the driveway. Progress in the form of a single step is still progress. In the words of Lao Tzu: “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”
This fall, the African Rainforest Conservancy (ARC) want to recognize the importance of that first step, and what it can achieve, whether in one community or the entire world.
The first group we would like to recognize in our blog series, #aSingleStep, is a student organization in Takoma Park, MD called the Young Activist Club. They took a stand in their school cafeteria when they realized that 600 students were being served lunch every day on styrofoam trays (the dangers of styrofoam). They pushed to replace the styrofoam trays with washable and reusable plastic trays. Now styrofoam is banned in several cities in the US!
This ban on styrofoam would not have happened if one person hadn’t taken that first step to change things. A small student group’s interest in greening the planet, led to action in their school, which led to an entire city’s decision to ban styrofoam.
This year the ARC is participating in #GivingTuesday again, a global giving event that takes place the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. So please take a single step in honor of the rainforests in Africa and the people and animals who depend on them by DONATING NOW!
